Grammy nominated rapper Remy Ma faces up to 25 years in prison after she was convicted for the alleged shooting of a friend.
The rapper, whose real name is Remy Smith, was found guilty on assault, weapons possession and attempted coercion charges by a jury at New York’s Supreme Court.
The charges relate to an incident which took place outside a nightclub in New York last year after Rae accused her friend, Makeda Barnes-Joseph, of stealing over $3,000 from her purse.
Prosecutors said that Smith deliberately shot Barnes-Joseph in the dispute that followed, while the rapper claims the shooting was an accident.
Smith picked up her Grammy nomination in 2004 for her collaboration with Terror Squad on their song ‘Lean Back’.
After the verdict was read, she was taken into custody ahead of sentencing on April 23rd.
