The BBC has announced that time is running out for pre-recorded music television, as bosses look to give Later… the edge over similar shows by featuring live performances.
Later… has become the bastion for new British music since the demise of Top of The Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test, regularly featuring artists on the strength of demos before they hit mainstream success.
The move follows complaints from viewers that the New Years’ Eve 'Later…' was in fact pre-recorded, despite being advertised as live.
Public calls for artists to stand up to the live test have left BBC bosses nervous that the change will give little lee-way for mistakes.
Even presenter Jools Holland will have to watch his language following his famous four-letter slip on Channel4’s ‘The Tube’.
The first live show will be aired on April 1st at 10pm and will feature performances from Gnarls Berkley, singer-songwriter James Taylor, and one-hit wonder 70s punk band the Only Ones.
Groomed pop starlet Adele, will also feature, alongside Floridian four-piece Black Kids, whose new single ‘I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You’ is set for release on April 7th.
