Another act to go with the whole capital-letters-in-spontaneous-positions scene, FrYars have more to themselves than an entertaining name. In 2006, the world was subjected to the glory that was ‘Silent Shout’ by The Knife. In comparison, their older material was so much more camp, proud, open and friendly and Ben Garrett’s new material echoes all of this. ‘The Perfidy EP’ is one hell of a showcase of his talent, a mishmash of euphoria, emotion and quintessentially, fun.
Cheesy drums in vicinity of super-deep vocals, ‘Olive Eyes’ in particular is one of those disco-anthems that you know is special the first time you come across it. In support of this is the elegant, “ballad” of-sorts, ‘Benedict Arnold’ and similarly mid-tempo closer ‘The Novelist’s Wife’ which is exceedingly clever (lyrics “now you can see there’s a mess you’re in, no problem solved without ketamine/and it’s probably best that you stay in your hole/for I’d rather stick to my ethanol” raising a chuckle of appreciation). Garrett has all the more proved to everyone that he doesn’t just do good remixes and that he has a blindingly beaming future ahead of him.
Released 17/03/08 on Makemine.
