Sir Paul McCartney Fronts Anti-Kangaroo Cull Campaign

Sir Paul McCartney has signed up to be the face of a campaign against the proposed cull of up to 500 Kangaroos in Australia.

Appearing in a video message for the welfare group Viva!, McCartney said that people must do all that they can to help prevent what he called a “shameful massacre”.

"There is an urgent need for action to protect kangaroos from a barbaric industry which slaughters them for meat and leather," he added.

Authorities say that the proposed cull on an Australian military base near Canberra is needed because the animals threaten other species.

Vegetarians International Voice for Animals have condemned the cull and protestors have threatened to form a human barricade.

The organisation has also set up a campaign in Europe, which has attracted support from across the world, reports Reuters.

  • I live in canberra and the roos are a pest. Is it better to let an animal to die of starvation due to over crowding or reduce numbers to a more manageable size to match the amount of feed available. Roos leave the area to find food. Cars are also found to hit them. About 60 a month in the region. These do gooders have no idea about the reality of the situation.

  • Australia should be ashamed. Peter Garrett is to blame for these poor kangaroos to be brutally killed. Qantas airlines runs the kangaroo emblem on the tail of their plane. What a joke. Shame Shame Shame Australia

  • please stop the kangaroo cull in Australia in CANBERRA.- PETER GARRETT IS ALLOWING 450 KANGAROOS TO BE KILLED AFTER EASTER. PLEASE CONTACT NEWSPAPERS AND VOICE YOUR DISGUST. RING TV SHOWS. STOP THIS CRUEL ACT FROM HAPPENING.

  • Proudly changed from beef to kangaroo and I haven’t looked back. Doctors agree its a healthier alternative to beef & other meats. All the cultural imperialists dictating to us should consider this; we have an abundance of kangaroo meat in this otherwise arid land where crops fail and droughts rein. If all the culls of kangaroos utilised this meat for human consumption it would go a long way to improving the health of our kangaroo population, our nation and our environment.
