Guy Garvey: 'There Would Be No Elbow Without Radiohead'

Elbow have paid tribute to the impact Radiohead have continued to have on the band since the Manchester outfit formed in the early 1990s.

Speaking to Gigwise, frontman Guy Garvey said: “I think they’re a terrific band – there'd be no Elbow without Radiohead.”

He said that there was a “hushed reverence” within Elbow about the group. “We don’t have to discuss how good they (Radiohead) are,” he said.

Bassist Pete Turner added that, unlike other bands, they’re not ashamed to talk about Radiohead’s influence on their music.

“A lot of bands shy away from it, a lot of bands wouldn’t admit to Radiohead being an influence but they’re one of our biggest,” he said.

Garvey admitted that he had been taken on a journey by the group - which began with Radiohead’s 1995 album, ‘The Bends’.

“They’ve really took me with ‘em as well, from ‘The Bends’ right the way through,” he said.

“I would say until ‘Hail To The Thief’ every album astonished me, like, that literally floored me. Literally. I’m lying there, astonished, unable to breathe.”
