Fans of Mike Smith, the lead singer of The Dave Clark Five who died yesterday aged 64, have been sending their thoughts to Gigwise.

Smith died from pneumonia after being admitted to Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Buckinghamshire on Wednesday with a chest infection.

His death comes just two weeks before The Dave Clark Five are to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at a ceremony in New York.

Chris, a fan of the band’s music in the sixties, told Gigwise: “The hits will never be forgotten, and Mike will always be remembered, god bless.”

Paddy was also touched by Smith: “Not many of the greats left,” he said. “All we have now is trash that can’t even play music. God bless you Dave.”

As the singer and keyboardist in the Dave Clark Five, Smith helped to spearhead an invasion of British music into America in the 60s with such hits as ‘Glad All Over’ and ‘I Like It Like That’.

According to his agent, Smith’s chest infection was a complication from a spinal cord injury sustained at his home in Spain in 2003 which left him paralysed from the waist down.

    • I’m lucky to have been the opening act for Mike when his group came to New York City a few years back. And my mother claims to be the first DC5 fan in Brooklyn. This is a sad day.

    • I am very very sad to hear of Mike Smiths death..I was a regular at the Tottenham dance hall where The Dave Clarke Five were on the same bill as Jerry Dorsey and Laura Lee and the band... Jerry Dorsey became Engelbert Humperdinck.. Mike’s version of Watermelon Man was wonderful...i absolutely adored him...i was always up the front trying desperately to catch his eye and often suceeding and getting rewarded with a wink...yummy... I have such wonderful memories... Thank you lovely Mike...God

    • The Dave Clark Five was the first rock group I truly loved . . . even to this day. It was truly sad to hear of Mike’s passing. I guess God needed a singer and believe me he got a damn good one!
