Joy Division Documentary Given UK Release Date

A new documentary about Joy Division will be released in the UK on May 2nd, it’s been announced.

The long awaited documentary, entitled Joy Division, follows in detail the band’s history through the analysis of band former members and associates.

Speaking to Gigwise about the documentary, former Joy Division bassist Peter Hook said it was “funny” to hear people analyse the style of the band’s frontman Ian Curtis - who committed suicide in 1980.

“On a song like ‘Dead Souls’ and [his] sizing up of the audience and intimidating the audience, you know, to get the stage set for what the gig was going to be like,” he explained.

“I’d never thought of things like that, it just came naturally to me and its funny how people look into something.”

The documentary, directed by Grant Gee, follows the release of Anton Corbijn’s awarding winning biopic, Control, which focussed more specifically on Ian Curtis’s life.
