John Peel’s gravestone has finally been erected more than three years after his death.

The memorial to the legendary DJ, who was buried at St Andrew’s Church in the village of Great Finborough, bears inscriptions taken from the two areas of his life he was most passionate about – music and football.

It features the lyrics to The Undertones’ song ‘Teenage Kicks’ and the Liver Bird, emblem of Liverpool FC.

Speaking about the gravestone Peel’s wife Sheila Ravenscroft told the BBC: "We have put the words on the stone that he would've wanted. I wouldn't dare do anything else!"

She added about the delay: "I suppose that it was my fault really. I couldn't face it to start with.

John Peel died on October 25 2004 at the age of 65.
