Young Knives: New Album Is Gooderer, Epic and Beautiful

Young Knives have described their latest album, ‘Superabundance’, as more “gooderer, epic and beautiful” than their last effort ‘Voices of Animals and Men.’

Gigwise caught up with the Oxford three-piece earlier this week, in what turned out to be a hilarious interview. Subjects touched upon included House of Lords becoming Oliver’s mum, being labelled as internet pervs and “wrolky jizzy polk ****s” – we kid you not.

Asked how ‘Superabundance’ differs from their previous efforts, frontman Henry Dartnall explains: “We’ve got a different producer – it’s a lot fuller. It’s a bit more stripped back and bare, there’s no sheen.”

Bassist House of Lords continued: “It’s got lots of layers of guitars and orchestras and trumpet and different overlaid percussive noises, and whoops and hollers.” Before sticksman Oliver Askew finished: “(It’s) more… gooderer, beautiful, epic; a bit more lush.”

But perhaps the most bizarre outburst came from House of Lords when explaining the band’s sound: “It’s loud punky folk-rock with quiet, punky, folky, rocky bits. With a bit of jazz. And some good tunes. But mainly, better than most stuff. Folky, rocky… slightly poppy, but mainly rocky, punky, folky. Polky, ****y. Wrongy polk ****. Wrolky jizzy polk ****s. Yes,” he elucidated.

Whatever drugs the man is on, we want some.

After taking the 'The' out of their name, the band joked they are going to reduce their name further on album number four:

House of Lords said: " (Just having a 'Y') would look pretty cool, the next album just with a big Y on it…Or we could be ‘semi-colon, comma, semi-colon, underscore, forward slash’ (FYI once more, it’d look like this ;,;_/)

Henry continued: "Or we could do it in Morse? And the first song on the album could be a little bit like the Inspector Morse theme tune - (he starts beeping) do do do doo doo YOUNG KNIVES do do do dooo.
