For all intents and purposes the musical partnership of Kanye West and Chris Martin should be quite a big deal. In one corner you have West, whose trilogy of albums has sold an impressive 11 millions copies to date. And, in the other you have Martin, frontman of supposedly ‘the next U2’, Coldplay. It’s with a remarkable understatement that ‘Homecoming’ seems to have been released, however. Built around a simple, yet infectiously catchy piano loop which follows to tone of both West and Martin’s voices beautifully, it’s another fine example of how West is still the only US hip-hop artist who can successfully (and consistently) step out of the genre he’s meant to be confined in. Whilst there’s nothing groundbreaking about ‘Homecoming’ – which perhaps explains its low-key release – it is a great example of what two differing minds can do when put in the same room.
Released 18/02/08 on Universal.
