Billy Joel is to play the last ever gig at New York’s legendary Shea Stadium it has been announced.
The July 16 concert entitled ‘The Last Play At Shea, From The Beatles To Billy’ is the first in-season gig since Eric Clapton and Elton John in 1992.
Gigs at the stadium began in 1965 with The Beatles and have since seen the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Police and Bruce Springsteen grace its diamond.
It is also the final season the New York Mets will play at the stadium before their move to the brand new Citi Field in 2009.
The gig takes place the day after this season’s All Star Game and will mean Joel will become the only artist to play Shea Stadium and Yankee Stadium.
Tickets for the show go on sale on February 16.
