The late Roy Orbison has received surely one of the most bizarre posthumous honours possible – a new species of beetle has been named after him.
Quentin Wheeler, an entomologist at the Arizona State University, made the announcement at a Roy Orbison tribute concert late last month, where he confirmed that the insect found in India will be called the Orectochilus Orbisonorum.
The concert was held at the Center for Film, Media and Popular Culture at the university, where Roy Orbison’s widow Barbara was in attendance. She said of the announcement: “I have never seen an honour like that.”
Wheeler explained to Mrs Orbison: “It’s a token of admiration for Roy’s body of work and all you do to keep his music alive.”
