US rapper Snoop Dogg has praised Barack Obama for making “a great step for black America” by running for the Democratic nomination in the US presidential race.
The rapper, who was speaking on Larry King Live, said that Obama’s campaign had shown that America is ready for a black president.
Despite his support for Obama, who is head-to-head with fellow democratic candidate Hilary Clinton going into tomorrow’s Super Tuesday, the rapper refused to be drawn on who he would vote for.
“I’m not down with the Republican Party or the Democratic Party; I represent the gangsta party,” Snoop Dogg said.
Speaking about Clinton and Obama, the rapper said “they both have strong situations to support them”.
“As far as Clinton, her husband was in office and when he was in office we had a great time and she was his backbone. Anybody knows that every strong man needs a woman to be his backbone," he said.
“So she basically, probably was the mind and soul behind him being the president.”
“Either one is a great move for America because we need change,” he added.
Snoop Dogg joins a long line of musicians who have found themselves swept up in America’s political future over recent months.
Last month, Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz held a fundraiser in Chicago in support of Barack Obama.
