Cat Power triumphed in London last night (January 27) and even endeared herself to the crowd by adopting a cockney accent.

The soulful singer completed the Eliza Doolittle image by sauntering around stage with flowers thrown from the audience at Shepherds Bush Empire.

After screams of “We love you,” Cat replied, in her best Eastenders twang, “Prove it, aww, prove it.”  She later added: “Cheers, big ears!”

In cheery mood throughout, she played a set that mixed old favourites like ‘Lived In Bars’ and ‘Naked If I Want To’ with songs from her new covers album, ‘Jukebox.’

She found time to embrace her hometown with a rendition of Frank Sinatra’s ‘Ney York, New York’ and also aired her Dylan tribute, ‘Song To Bobby.’

Fears that Cat, real name Chan Matshall, had revisited her old unreliable ways grew when she disappeared during ‘Where Is My Love.’  As the four-piece band played on nervously, she thankfully returned with drinks and a cigarette.

The 90 minute set ended abruptly, after a striking reinterpretation of Otis Redding’s ‘I’ve been Loving You Too Long.’  Left alone onstage, she bowed to rapturous applause, scattering set lists and petals before departing without encore.
