Ringo Starr Starts Liverpool's Capital Of Culture Year

Ringo Starr and The Wombats kick-started Liverpool’s European Capital of Culture with a special gig on top of St George’s Hall in the city.

The Beatles legend knocked out his song ‘Liverpool 8’ to a crowd of 20,000 from a 100ft platform on the Liverpool landmark, while The Wombats somewhat ironically blasted out ‘Moving To New York’ in the blustery weather conditions.

The celebrations also featured a huge fireworks display and some of Liverpool’s famous faces greeting the audience.

On Saturday night, it was over to the newly built Echo Arena for ‘Liverpool: The Musical’, where 63-year-old Ringo performed once again. As well as his new single, The Beatle bashed out The Beatles classic ‘With A Little Help From My Friends.’

The Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra provided backing instrumentation to a night which also saw performances from the likes of Echo & The Bunnymen, The Farm, Shack, Pete Wylie, The Wombats and The Christians.
