Radiohead Score Their Second American Number One Album

Radiohead have shot to the top of the album charts in America with ‘In Rainbows,’ making it a chart double on both sides of the Atlantic.

Gigwise’s album of 2007 shifted 122,000 copies in its first week of sales and has become only their second ever album to reach the top spot in America, following the lead of ‘Kid A’ back in 2000.

Despite reaching number one, the sales figure was dramatically down on their previous record ‘Hail To Thief’ which reached the number 3 after shifting 300,000 copies. Still, it’s an impressive feat considering the ‘pay-what-you-want’ download back in October and is another triumph for the Oxford band.

Music sales in America last week were down an average of 37.5% from the week before as the Christmas boom dies down.

Elsewhere in the Billboard chart this week Mary J Blige’s ‘Growing Pains’ dropped to number three, while Alicia Keys’ ‘As I Am’ remains at two.

    • 122,000 copies?! That’s nothing. Must have been a real quiet week!
