New proposals from the Government are expected to call for the legalisation of coping music from CD to a home computer.
Under UK copyright law, the process of burning a CD to a computer and then transferring it to a portable MP3 player is currently illegal.
The new proposals, unveiled by Intellectual property minister Lord Triesman, would stop short of legalising other topical areas such as internet file-sharing, however.
Lord Triesman said that amending the law for the burning of CDs for personal use would ensure that it “keeps up with the times”.
According to the BBC, the proposal will state that the owner must remain in possession of the CD and would not be allowed to sell or pass on their copy.
Lord Triesman’s finding will go up for public consultation on March 7th.
