Morrissey In Talks To Play Iran

He hopes to crack strict country laws to play...

Morrissey is planning to perform a concert in Iran later this year.

His management are currently awaiting a decision from Iran’s Ministry of Culture as to whether he can play the country.

The Smiths man is hoping to play to capital of Tehran and wants one of his heroes, Arab pop singer Kazem al-Sahir to join him on the bill, reports The Independent. However, he faces an uphill struggle in a country where western pop lyrics are banned.

The pledged show will hopefully be part of a longer Middle Eastern tour the singer is scheduling for the summer.

Merck Mercuriadis, his manager, said:  “It's a major priority for us. One way or another we will tour the Middle East – in terms of places like Jerusalem and Beirut. And we hope to play Iran."

If successful, Morrissey will follow in the footsteps of drippy balladeer Chris de Burgh, who is performing with the band Arian in the country this year. De Burgh will be the first western musician to play the country in 29 years.

  • Morrissey is essentially against many aspects of western politics and would be a great ambasador for the people who do not share the views of Bush and Blair. It would be a major step forward for the British and American people who are sick to death of 2 party poiticians taking away their voices and a media that only spreads fear about the east and its culture.

    • @Gigwise Hmm, there might be some technical reason they're doing them in a particular order. Christ knows.

    • @Gigwise It's because the only way they could get Dave Rowntree to play the drums was to hypnotise him. Too strenuous otherwise, poor chap.
