Music download sales during the last week of 2007 were twice that of the exact same week 12 months earlier, sales figures released today have revealed.
The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) believes that with the ongoing popularity of MP3 players as Christmas presents, there was a massive growth surge in music downloads during the festive period.
Over the whole of 2007 there were 77.5million downloads, and a record 2.95million in the last week of the year alone.
BPI spokesman Matt Phillips told the BBC: “Recent years have seen a boost in download sales in the week after Christmas but this was a larger increase than expected.”
However, despite downloads accounting for 90% of singles sales, the growth has not spread to albums. 95% of long-players sold are still in the physical format.
