Prince’s O2 Arena residency has been voted as the best British concert of the year, controversially ahead of Led Zeppelin’s reformation show this month.
The Telegraph deemed that “nothing in British music history has come close to Prince's run of 21 live shows at the O2 arena.” A pretty bold statement we’re sure you’ll agree!
The Zep’s Ahmet Ertegun’s tribute concert at the very same venue came in at second place, with newspaper saying that they were “blown away” by the sheer spectacle.
Arcade Fire’s intimate show at St John’s in London this February came in at third place, while PJ Harvey’s Bristol Colston Hall show was at fourth.
However, seriously throwing the quality of the poll in to doubt, Mika’s KOKO show in February was voted in fifth position. Hmmm.
The full top ten is as follows:
1. Prince @ O2 Arena, London - August-September
2. Led Zeppelin @ O2 Arena, London - December 10
3. Arcade Fire @ St John’s, London – February 1
4. PJ Harvey @ Colston Hall, Bristol – September 24
5. Mika @ KOKO, London – February 22
6. Bruce Springsteen @ Odyssey Arena, Belfast – December 15
7. Patti Smith @ Roundhouse, London – May 17
8. The Good, The Bad & The Queen @ Latitude Festival, Southwold – July 14
9. Take That @ Odyssey Arena, Belfast – October 12
10. Beirut @ Roundhouse, London – November 10

- Only people who were at the concerts can legitimately vote of course as mobile phone footage cannot be relied upon but having said that and seeing the footage, Zep have given me a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes it was so beautiful. So considering Prince did 21 shows and Led Zeppelin just the one, we are not talking about a level playing field here. Of course Prince is going to get more votes - more people went.

- Daft Punk’s pyramid??

- Why is this even a debate? I was at both shows, and the mighty Zep was unsurpassed and unequaled. Thanks, Lad!

- Obviously more people went to 21 Prince concerts than 1 Led Zep show, so it’s a ridiculous poll. With over a BILLION hits on the website for Zeppelin tickets and in excess of 125 million attempts to register for tickets, Led Zeppelin could sell out the O2 Arena every night for a several years straight, then let’s have our little vote. P.S. Prince is a great entertainer, but Led Zeppelin are the greatest rock band in history. No contest.
