A number of famous London music venues could be saved thanks to new plans unveiled by the government.
The Astoria, Hammersmith Palais and Camden’s Electric Ballroom are all thought to be under threat because of planning proposals in the city.
A campaign has already been launched to save the Astoria which faces closure because of the proposed new cross-London rail link.
James Purnell, the Secretary for the department for Culture, Media and Sport said yesterday that the government would try to “ensure key music venues are not closed down in London and, if they are, to explore how suitable replacements can be provided.”
Speaking particularly about the Astoria, Purnell said he would work with London mayor Ken Livingstone to find a replacement.
Over the years the famous venue has played host to the Rolling Stones, Oasis and Nirvana.
