Brighton council are looking to ban music that incites hatred upon minorities from all their pubs and clubs in the south coast city.
The ban looks to cover all music live or recorded that allegedly incites hatred on religious, racial or sexuality grounds.
The council were seemingly spurred on by the Buju Banton show that was cancelled at the Brighton Concorde 2. The show was pulled due to the homophobic nature of his song ‘Boom Bye Bye’, which contains lyrics about shooting gay men.
However, chairwoman of the council's licensing committee, Dee Simson, says that it’s not a ban that will affect the freedom of speech. She tells the BBC: "It will be used in really extreme cases to stop the playing of what's loosely termed murder music."
