Gavin Thorpe - 'Out Of Place'

Like his name, which sounds like a boy out of your maths class at school, Bristolian Gavin Thorpe's first release on the IRL label is equally ordinary. His lyrics talk of his heart being like a “speeding train” and you could say this is a train wreck of a song. That’s not to say it’s totally without musical merit, more like some of you will cry at the romanticisms while others will simply wonder about the state of the world today and stop listening.

His cover of Mr Timberlake’s ‘Cry Me A River’ is accomplished but whines and serves only to highlight the strong points of the original. Mr Thorpe is incredibly earnest, has a soothing voice and ’Out of Place’ features some lovely guitar but there’s sadly little else to commend him for on the basis of this release.

    Released 26/11/07 on IRL.
