Radiohead have spoken in depth about their latest album, ‘In Rainbows,’ with frontman Thom Yorke admitting that its unique release wasn’t a new idea.
Speaking to BBC 6 Music, Yorke said that he originally wanted to use the idea to allow fans to choose what price they paid for an album on his 2006 debut, ‘The Eraser.’
“I still wanted to do it on ‘The Eraser,’ but it was too difficult, every record that we have done for ages has been leaked, and why not just leak the bloody thing yourself, why let someone else nick it and get it wrong and get the wrong version – do it yourself,” he explained.
For the idea to work with, ‘In Rainbows,’ Yorke said that the whole process was kept top secret from the beginning.
“We weren’t allowed to have copies in the house,” he revealed. “We had to destroy all copies, none in cars, you listen to it once and then you would have to give it back or erase it.”
When asked how much he paid for the release, Yorke said: “I’ve downloaded it for nothing obviously, I thought it would be silly to pay money, I just swap it from pocket to the other!”
