Those of you who remember GCSE French will no doubt recall endless hours learning how to order bread, ask directions and tell strangers the time. You will also know how to say your name "Je m’appelle (insert name)". This apparently opened up all avenues of French life to the extent that you could be sent to Lyon to live with a French family for a fortnight and just carry on your life as normal, it’s a wonder that we don’t have more kids entering their adult life who have nervous break downs and the mere mention of a Parisian loaf. Carrying on a French theme however are Liverpool’s Elle S’appelle the delightfully excellent trio who are taking increasingly big steps towards the nations ears and hearts.
Comprising of Singer and bassist Andy, keys and vocals Lucy and drummer Owen their brand of wiry frantic but cute pop music has taken them from their virginal state to releasing a single on Moshi Moshis singles club in just 10 months. So boring questions out of the way first, how did the band get together? Andy picks up the mantle, “Basically there is no glamorous back story- it was just Myspace. We have all been in local bands before this one so knew each other through mutual friends and I knew that my band Guilded Of Defiants were coming do an end and I was writing songs that were very influenced by the likes of Pixies and Mates Of State. I was demoing them acoustically and singing the parts in falsetto where I knew I wanted a girl to sing. That’s when I thought of Lucy, I had seen her band and her solo work and liked what I heard, I also knew Owens drumming was good so we all got together and started rehearsing. Eventually we realised that this was what we wanted to do full time so left our respective bands and focused 100% on Elle S’appelle.”
The newly committed 3 piece played their first gig on June 1st at the Liverpool Barfly and a week later they were played on Steve Lamacqs Radio 6 show. How did a band with one gig under their belt end up with national Radio play from one of the countries most respected DJ’s? “Basically Rich from Go Faster>> (Local band and Gigwise favourites) told us to send our demo out to him as he might play it, he had played Go Fasters>> and so we thought it was worth a try, just to see what happened. He really liked it and sent us a message saying he was going to play it on his afternoon show. It was a real honour and has really helped us along the way.” Lucy continues, “It’s really nice to know that someone like Steve Lamacq likes us and he has gone on to play us on Radio 2 and we got on Zane Lowes show on Radio 1 too. The day after you are on something like that you go on Myspace and there is like ten pages of friend requests, it’s overwhelming.”
