Bloc Party - 'Flux'

starstarstarstarno star

With, ‘A Weekend In The City’ - their concept record about the vampire infested streets of London - now written off as a certified triumph, Bloc Party return unexpectedly but most welcomely with the adequately entitled, ‘Flux.’ “We must talk about our problems /We are in a state of flux,” sings Kele Okereke with his usual self-conscious grimace, which, as Bloc Party continue to blossom into the band that they’ve for so long threatened to become, is rapidly developing into a self-confident grin.

As Okereke battles the human emotions of romance and despair, it’s musically where ‘Flux’ really provides a look at Bloc Party’s future. Generated almost exclusively from the rippling sounds of Gordon Moakes’ intolerant synthesiser, the song’s dynamic melody is propelled without a bassline over a 4/4 beat which is breathlessly relentless. If this is what Bloc Party sound like in a state of flux between albums, then one can only imagine what the future has in store.

Released 12/11/07 on Wichita.
