An investigation has been launched after alleged pictures of the dead body of reggae star Lucky Dube surfaced via MMS.
Dube was murdered in front of members of his family on October 18th in an attempted car hijacking. His funeral took place on October 28th.
The photos are reported to show the top half of Dube’s body and are believed to have been shot in the mortuary where his body was held.
Mzwakhe Mbuli – who is known locally in South Africa as the people’s poet – said that the distribution of the images was “despicable.”
He said: “It shows no respect. What's wrong with our conscience? It is a crying shame."
A spokesperson for the Gauteng Health Department said that a source for the photos hadn’t yet been discovered.
Zanele Mngadi told News24 that following a post mortem in Johannesburg Dube’s body had been taken away by a private undertaker.
"It's not acceptable that something like that should happen. It's very worrying. But it's very difficult to establish exactly where the photos were taken," Mngadi said.
Four people have been remanded in custody charged with the murder of the reggae star. The case is expected to reconvene on November 30th.
