The Verve made a storming return to the live stage last night (November 2nd) with a show at Glasgow’s Carling Academy.
It was the first time the original four-piece had been onstage together since Nick McCabe quit the Wigan outfit in 1998.
The band tore through a 16 song set that was heavily weighted towards their classics like ‘Bittersweet Symphony’, ‘The Drugs Don’t Work’, ‘Sonnet’ and the opening ‘This Is Music.’ Perhaps the only disappointment of the night was that ‘History’ was omitted from the set.
Just one new song was introduced to the crowd, an untitled track seven songs into the set, which the NME claims owes more to Gorillaz than other Verve tracks. Hmmm.
The band were duly revered by the sold-out crowd and more importantly, Ashcroft and McCabe were at ease with each other throughout the set.
They played:
This Is Music
Sonnet
The Sun, The Sea
Weeping Willow
Life’s An Ocean
Space and Time
Untitled Track
Velvet Morning
Catching The Butterfly
A Northern Soul
The Drugs Don’t Work
The Rolling People
Bittersweet Symphony
Man Called Sun
Lucky Man
Come On
