The Magic Numbers played an intimate gig in Reykjavik, Iceland on Sunday on what was the culmination of activities following the Iceland Airwaves festival.
The show at Nasa (no connection to the space agency) was the second instalment of Coke’s Music Discovery Sessions, following Siouxise Sioux’s triumphant show at the Eiffel Tower last month.
As part of the Discovery Sessions’ drive, The Magic Numbers hand-picked their support act on the night Horsebox, who fared well in front of a rammed venue.
Explaining the reason for the selection, keyboardist and vocalist Angella Gannon told us: “We’ve known them since we became a four piece and they’ve just been getting it together properly in the last year or so. The lead singer’s from Iceland too so it’s handy.”
Fervently followed local act Skakkamanage opened proceedings before Horsebox paved the way for The Magic Numbers’ hour-and-a-half set.
The set featured such hits as ‘Forever Lost’, ‘Love Is A Game’, ‘Take A Chance’ and ‘I See You, You See Me.’
Despite the ridiculously high drinks prices, drummer Sean said the band were enjoying the delights of the country, explaining: “It’s a weird place, but there’s something magical about it. I can’t put my finger on exactly what it is, but the people are just really, really friendly.”
He continued that the band had been lapping up the music since they arrived, revealing his favourite new Icelandic act: “I saw an absolutely amazing band yesterday called Retro Stepson.
“There’s eight of them and they’re pretty much between the ages of 12 and 16, they’re kind of like a really energetic Pavement, I was blown away. It was in a club called the Naked Ape AND the beer was free, which kind of helps.”
The next Coke Music Discovery session takes place in late November in Athens, Greece.
