Green Day Call Current Scene 'Stagnant' Add to My Fav Bands List

Green Day have a huge 45 songs primed and ready to record for their new album – but say they’re finding it hard to draw inspiration from the current ‘stagnant’ music scene.

Peter Pan-esque frontman Billie Joe Armstrong explains that the band are in the midst of a chaotic writing process in studios in Oakland and California, and that they hope to whittle down the songs soon.

Speaking of the follow-up to 2004’s hugely successful ‘American Idiot’, he told Rolling Stone: “We have a lot of music – something like 45 songs. It’s total chaos, I want to dig into who I am and what I’m feeling at this moment – which is middle aged.

“We’ve been doing this for 20 years now. You want to make sure you’re being honest with yourself. I also have to ask myself ‘what’s real out there?’ Right now, it seems stagnant.”

He went on to explain that he’s unsure when the record will see the light of day.

  • Fuck yeah....it’s about time we heard something from Green Day. I’ve been hearing rumors about their new album, but it’s reassuring to hear it from the man himself that they’re actually working on one.

  • Stagnant? What is he basing this on- Billboard charts? Green Day are the kind of band that makes music stagnant today. There are hundreds of artists doing great things but almost all are fairly low profile. Every artist that’s ever made a buck spouts at some point during their career how the music today ”just isn’t good anymore.”

  • When Green Day went corporate in the 90’s, they were at the bleeding edge of mall-core punk rock. They started out ”on the ground”, not made in meetings by marketing and promotion staff - ”image” creation - but that is the route they took to their current wealth. Now, they’ve come full circle, saying what we said about them in the early 90’s. Irony at its finest. I say the best bands out there play dives, parties, garages, and living rooms, and the
