The Kooks Cover Velvet Underground and Dylan At Oxjam Gig

The Kooks covered The Velvet Undergound and Bob Dylan during the opening gig of Oxjam in London last night.

Frontman Luke Pritchard and guitarist Hugh Harris played a stripped down acoustic set in front of just over 100 people in the intimate surroundings of the Oxfam store on Kingsland Road, Dalston, North London.

After playing a string of crowd favourites an newer songs, the band played a stomping version of ‘Sweet Jane’ before they rolled into the Dylan classic ‘Tangled Up In Blue’ - much to the bemusement of the younger members of the audience.

Before the Brighton outfit took to the stage, the legendary Jarvis Cocker treated the audience to some of his most cherished records from his collection.

The madcap DJ set featured children’s songs such as ‘Sweet Gingerbread Men’, Rolf Harris’s ’War Canoe’ (which Jarv explained Adam and the Ants plagiarised on ‘Prince Charming’),  Led Zeppelin’s Trampled Underfoot and Paul Gasgoine’s ‘Fog on the Tyne’, all interspersed with his highly amusing, yet sometime incoherent ramblings.

Fittingly, he finished his 45 minute set with ‘Kooks’ by David Bowie - the song, of course, that the headline act were named after.

A vivacious Remi Nicole opened proceedings playing tracks like ‘Tabloid Queen’, ‘Dates From Hell’, ‘Fed Up’, ‘Don’t Miss The Sunshine’ and set closer ‘Rock and Roll’ with plenty of gusto.

She later joined The Kooks at the very end of the night for a rendition of ‘She Moves In Her Own Way’. Earlier on in the night, the band treated the crowd to newies ‘Oil’ and ‘Sway’ alongside favourites such as ‘Ooh La’, ‘See The World’, ‘Naïve’ and ‘Jacquie Big Tits’.

The Oxjam sessions continue with a show from Jamelia tonight. Hot Chip and Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly follow tomorrow, while Fatboy Slim rounds things off for the Dalston store on Thursday.
