Sir Elton John has launched a scathing attack on the American Governments AIDS prevention strategy, dubbing them "idiots".
The singer-songwriter has slammed the George W Bush led emphasis on abstonence at his Aids gala in New York this week.
He told the audience, "They've made a grave error in giving millions to abstinence programs. They don't work. They were told in the beginning that it wouldn't work. It's a tragic waste of money. Please don't listen to those idiots. God almighty."
Earlier this month Elton called on British Prime Minister Gordon Brown to take the lead on fighting the AIDS epidemic in Africa.
