Patrick Watson were annopunced as the surprise winners of this year’s Polaris Prize in Toronto last night.
The award, which is similar in its epithet to the UK’s Mercury Prize, awards £20,000 to the creator Canada’s best album.
Watson’s record ‘Close To Paradise’ beat off strong competition from the likes of Arcade Fire, The Besnard Lakes, Junior Boys and The Dears.
Last year’s inaugural Prize went to Final Fantasy’s ‘He Poos Clouds’.
