PJ Harvey's has revealed her new album was written after a year spent as a jobbing bass player in Los Angeles.
Harvey moved to Los Angeles after finishing touring her last album 'Uh Huh Her' in 2005 and spent 12 months playing in a group formed by Morris Tepper, who used to play in Captain Beefheart’s Magic Band.
She tells the Times, "It was fantastic. Lifting gear around, driving vans to venues, rehearsing and practising new songs. It really made me think about tuning in to other people, and I’m not used to doing that.”
After relocating back to her native Dorset Harvey came up with an unprecidented 50 songs to form 'White Chalk' out of - and she says she's delighted with her new album.
"I’m really proud of it. This album is everything I wanted it to be, which doesn’t always happen. My goal is always not to repeat myself, but I’m a bit lenient on myself sometimes.”
