Opera legend Luciano Pavarotti has died at the age of 71.
His manager Terri Robinson made the announcement in the early hours of this morning that the world famous singer had passed away at home in Modena, North Italy.
The tenor was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year and had been battling the disease ever since.
Over the past year he underwent chemotherapy five times to fight the disease. Just last month he was admitted to hospital with a fever and was released two weeks later.
Robinson said of the music icon: “The Maestro fought a long, tough battle against the pancreatic cancer which eventually took his life.
"In fitting with the approach that characterised his life and work, he remained positive until finally succumbing to the last stages of his illness."
Pavarotti – along with fellow tenors Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras – was responsible for raising the profile of opera music.
Perhaps his most memorable moment was performing Nessun Dorma for the 1990 football World Cup. Watch it below:
