Amy Winehouse has said that she believes drinking is worse than taking the Class-A drug heroin.
Speaking at last night’s Nationwide Mercury Music Prize, where she made a triumphant live comeback, she said: "Drinking long-term is a lot worse than doing heroin. Alcohol's a real poison."
Winehouse flew in especially for last night’s event from a holiday with her husband Blake Fielder-Civil in St Lucia, where the couple had tried to escape recent press attention.
Despite her comments, the singer said that she had no plans to give up her drinking.
"Normal people spend time thinking, 'What am I going to do with my life?' I spend my time drinking," she told the Mirror.
After a number of failed attempts at rehab, the star also said that she has no plans to have another go at beating her demons.
"I'm of the school of thought where, if you can't sort something out for yourself, no one can help you. Rehab is great for some people but not others."

- Apart from overdose (which happens mainly due to unknown purity and cuts like fentanyl), pure heroin HCl is virtually harmless, physically. Doctors have been known to have had secret daily IV heroin habits using pharm grade heroin for years with no ill effects to the body. The same can’t be said for daily alcohol abuse.
- your comment is insanely ill informed! Heroin is indeed the deadliest drug there is. I have attended funerals for addicts, 1st time users and AIDs victims due to heroin use. It also funds the terrorists. Heroin production by the Taliban is up 1000 % since the war started. Amy Winehouse is an idiot for making such an irresponsible clueless statement. - sad obsserver is right and what’s more, I have seen my friends battle heroin addiction , from just snorting it, and one of them almost died, ending up shooting it up with some bumb in NYC. Good luck with that attitude Amy, although I love her voice.

Heroin damages every major organ of the body, especially heart &liver. It also causes collapsed veins & infections. Withdrawel is HELL. If you’ve watched an addict writhing on the floor screaming you’d understand. If you’ve had to lift a body with foam coming out it’s nose you’d understand. Don’t defend Amy or her slow suicide. Hopefully she’ll get help before she becomes an object lesson. And don’t try to lecture me about heroin. I know
