‘Scar’ is an unusual Stephen Fretwell song, mainly due to the fact that it doesn’t sound like a Stephen Fretwell song. This, the first release from his new album ‘Man On The Roof’, sees the honorary Manc coming on a little less folk and a little more country. Seemingly channeling the spirit of Gram Parsons, ‘Scar’ ambles along nicely, with a more happy-go-lucky feel than most of Fretwell’s previous releases.
This change in sound could in part be influenced by Fretwell’s decision to record ‘Man On The Roof’ in New York, and ‘Scar’ is as polished and pretty as anything currently being produced by any of his contemporaries. With the American record-buying public lapping up all things British at the moment, this could mark the moment that Stephen Fretwell’s commercial success begins to match the critical acclaim that’s been bestowed on him so far.
Released 03/09/07 on Polydor
