Bat For Lashes is the current bookmakers’ favourite to scoop this year’s Mercury Music Prize.

Previous favourite Amy Winehouse has dropped off Ladbrokes’ top spot seemingly because of her ongoing drugs problems to make way for Natasha Khan.

Ladbrokes spokesman Nick Weinberg told the BBC:  "Amy's had a difficult time of it lately, and that's coincided with backers deserting her."

Bat For Lashes’ ‘Fur and Gold’ is sitting pretty with odds of 11/4, while Wino has slipped to 9/4.

Despite her troubles, organisers say that they are still confident that Ms Winehouse will turn up for the show. Er, right.

    • I think the Mercury Awards should award contemporary, new age sound. Winehouse is already old news. Although I like some of Winehouse’s tracks, I find her overall image predictable - alongside many other rebel hollywood glamour girls. Instead, Natasha Khan et al bring a crisp new sound that is rare for an all-girl band. Being in Canada I cannot wait till her music hits mainstream airwaves. For now, I access her from the underground.

    • If any of the following win it’s a travesty: Klaxons : NME scenester guff Arctic Monkeys : one trick ponys New Young Pony Club : No trick ponys. I’d like to see Fionn Regan win but with people like Lauren ’I gets all my music knowledge from NME I does’ Laverne on the panel I fear for the worst. Awards shows suck anyway!

    • Although I would have liked Bat For Lashes to win I also think the Klaxons album was a really good album. Alhough I do tend to agree with previous comment by NornIron about that NME connection on the judging panel - the chances were high that the eventual winner was going to be a band or artist with an NME history ... unfortunately the NME didnt even have a proper Bat For Lashes page up till yesterday?!? ... sad but true!
