Members of New Order and the Happy Mondays were among mourners at the funeral of Tony Wilson yesterday (August 20th).
A host of television and music personalities joined members of the public at the service at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, in Manchester’s city centre.
Wilson – who co-founded factory records and was heralded as launching the careers of Joy Division, New Order and the Happy Mondays – died last week at the age of 57 from a heart attack.
Wilson had been battling with kidney cancer at the time of his tragic death.
New Order’s Peter Hook and Stephen Morris, and Happy Mondays’ frontman Shaun Ryder were all present at yesterday’s funeral.
Although the funeral was by invitation only, members of the public held a silent vigil outside the church.
One member of public told the BBC: “He was such a great guy and great ambassador for Manchester,” adding that they felt “duty-bound” to attend the funeral.
