Babyshambles Unveil Highly Personal 'Delivery' Artwork

A painting of Pete's hero...

Share

Babyshambles have unveiled the artwork to their new single ‘Delivery’, and it’s steeped in personal meaning for frontman Pete Doherty.

It’s based on a famous painting of one of Pete’s many heroes, the poet Thomas Chatterton, as painted by pre-Raphaelite artist Henry Wallis.

Chatterton tragically committed suicide at the age of just 17 in 1770, after leaving an eventful life. The child prodigy submitted his poems under a pseudonym to avoid being shunned because of his age.

Wallis brought his death, erm, to life, some 76 years later with arguably his most famous piece ‘Death of Chatterton.’

According to the NME, Pete drew a sketch of the painting while behind bars in 2003 for breaking into Carl Barat’s flat.

  • Is it unbelievably vain of Doherty to compare himself to established poets when he has all the lyrical power of a cold portion of McDonald’s fries? Yes, it is. Either write great lyrics or jack up some more smack. But don’t start kidding yourself that you’re of equal significance on the basis of a couple of half baked albums. I’ll grant this - if he was still as bright and as sharp as he was when he was 17, he might be amazing. But he’s pasted himself so

  • Larrikin Love used the same painting for the Happy as Annie cover. It was better.

  • boris you ”two-bob cunt”! pete is not comparing himself with Chatterton, he is paying tribute to his hero. I have to agree with Rob, although Babyshambles’ music has been met with mixed feelings, there has never been any question of Doherty’s lyrical genius. Just jump on the sun’s band wagon like everyone else. ”Do you know him? I don’t think so!”
