Babyshambles have unveiled the artwork to their new single ‘Delivery’, and it’s steeped in personal meaning for frontman Pete Doherty.
It’s based on a famous painting of one of Pete’s many heroes, the poet Thomas Chatterton, as painted by pre-Raphaelite artist Henry Wallis.
Chatterton tragically committed suicide at the age of just 17 in 1770, after leaving an eventful life. The child prodigy submitted his poems under a pseudonym to avoid being shunned because of his age.
Wallis brought his death, erm, to life, some 76 years later with arguably his most famous piece ‘Death of Chatterton.’
According to the NME, Pete drew a sketch of the painting while behind bars in 2003 for breaking into Carl Barat’s flat.
