Government Funds Delay Madonna’s Adoption

Madonna’s adoption of an African baby has been delayed again because of “inadequate” Malawian government funds.

A director of Malawi's Ministry of Women and Child Development has been due to visit the singer and her adopted child, David Banda, at her London home, but a lack of “financial resources” has so far prevented the visit.

Penston Kilembe told AFP: "There are no adequate financial resources for the inspection, but as soon as the government has money, we will do it."

Malawi is currently being run on piecemeal funds as the country’s national budget has yet to be established.

The Malawian adoption process stipulates that Madonna must prove that she is taking sufficient care of the child before she is made the official guardian.

An official Malawian court mandate means that Kilembe is the only person who has been granted the authority to make the visit. The first inspection was due in April.
