Whilst Miss Ellis Bextor is easier on the eye than she used to be, her most recent releases have been no match for the catchiness of her 2001 debut. Sadly, although ‘Today The Sun’s On Us’ is nicey nicey mid-tempo pop, it’s no ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’. Where’s the beat? Where’s the attitude? There’s not even a dance routine to it. It’s intended to be Brit girly pop of the Kylie variety that Sophie used to pioneer so well, but now UK pop has moved on with Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen et al becoming its new muse. Perhaps an investment in Mark Ronson's Midas touch would update Sophie's sound and give her the tunes her voice deserves. What we’ve all learnt from this is that Sophie’s articulate tones is best paired with a decent dancefloor beat a la Spiller’s ‘Groovejet (If This Ain't Love)’). Oh well, at least she still pronounces her vowels correctly.
