The Enemy’s frontman Tom Clarke has said that having “working-class roots” means better songs.
With the Coventry band's debut album, ‘We’ll Live And Die in These Towns,’ heading for the number one spot this Sunday, Clarke has taken the opportunity to talk about the relevance of his band’s songs.
He said: “Bands like Arctic Monkeys are great, especially their first album, but their songs are all about the weekend. Ours are more about the working man. I think having working-class roots does mean better songs as they are songs the majority can relate to.”
He continued: “If you live in a castle, you’re going to write about living in a castle and who wants to hear a ****ing song about a castle?”
The nineteen year-old singer also told The Sun about the band’s loyalty to their hometown of Coventry.
In a sentiment that echoes the loyalty of the Arctic Monkeys to their hometown of Sheffield he said: “As much as we sing about the downsides of the place, we still love it, we would never leave. It's us. We belong there."

i would like to hear a song about a castle
Spanish Castle Magic is one of my fave Hendrix songs actually.
- what a load of ’chip on the shoulder’ shite. How is being working / middle / upper class going to affect being in LOVE which is essentially what all pop music is about - Wanting to shag someone. You’ll move to London, get a ****-off Georgian Terrace and start writing songs about Tabloid Cocaine Hell. It’ll happen. Trust me.

- I live in a castle and I write about 3rd world poverty!
