Just days after hundreds of fans walked out early during her show in Oakland, Lauryn Hill has come under fire from British fans for her “dismal” performance at London’s Hammersmith Apollo last night (July 8).

What was supposed to be a glorious return to British shores turned into a farce with Hill singing in a “croaky” and “out-of-tune” voice after turning up late on stage. The performance prompted many fans to abandon the show.

Gigwise has received a deluge of messages from fans complaining about Hill’s performance. One wrote to us: “Her croaky shouting could barely be heard over the band - disappointing when the audience came to hear her beautiful, soulful voice and inspiring lyrics.”

Another wrote: “She was being booed after about 20-30mins and I would say after about 45 mins people were leaving en masse.”

A more damning comment reads: “I went to the Hammersmith Apollo gig and what is wrong with the woman? Voice has gone, the band was bad and she comes in late and doesn’t perform many people weren’t happy and hundreds left wanting refunds. If you have tickets for any of her shows get rid of as soon as you can.”

While a fan who walked out on the show early said:  “No warmth, no soul and absolutely no connection with the audience. With her crazy hair and raincoat she reminded me of a bag lady you’d avoid if you saw her in the street, or at best, Whitney in her crack days.”

It seems fans in Birmingham tonight (July 9) and Newcastle tomorrow are in for a cracking show.

  • I was there. Everyone wanted to hear her SING - instead we heard a ridiculously loud band and a shouting, crazy woman. If you got Lauryn Hill tickets - SELL DEM NOW boy

  • I was there last night and I absolutely loved it! It’s not her fault that she had a sore throat, I think she coped very well considering. And I was right in the middle standing and certainly did not notice any en masse evacuation, I think you are all exaggerating.

  • Really shaky start, but it did improve. Such a shame that you could only hear the quality of her voice a couple of times in the show. Thought the band were good, playing a bit heavy to compensate for Ms Hill’s lack of voice maybe - but they looked a bit tense..

  • Probaly the worst gig I have ever been to. I spent most of the concert with my fingers in my ears to muffle the overpowering drums. Her vocals were weak, hardly ever breaking through. She would have been better off ditching the band and going acoustic.
