The Monkey work machine roles on, and shows no sign of losing neither the originality of lyrics nor catchiness of its riffs. Slower paced than recent singles, ‘Fluorescent Adolescent’ is Beatles-esque in its bass driven lead and jangling rhythm parts, yet thoroughly modern in its portrayal of love “Oh the boys a slag/ The best you’ve ever had”. Pumping out catchy rhymes with more words a minute than a secretary on speed, Arctic Monkeys remain original and significantly contemporary. Their northern swagger is thus still as warmly received here, even if they use words most journalists can’t spell (no, not adolescent). Another reason to remember why we loved them in place of shite like The Kooks.
