Parts of a new roof for the iconic Salford Lads Club have been stolen halting a £250,000 renovation of the iconic building.
Featured on the cover of The Smiths’ 1986 album ‘The Queen Is Dead’ the club has since become a Mecca for the bands’ fans.
Building work on the roof of the Grade II listed building was set to start on Tuesday but when the builders arrived they found that lead and guttering had been stolen.
A spokesman the for the restoration project said: "We are devastated by this criminal act. The thieves have basically stolen from Ordsall kids' futures.
"We were just about to start work on the roof and all the scaffolding had just been put up.
"When the roofers arrived on site on Tuesday they thought they could hear a tap running inside, but it was actually rain water pouring through the roof."
In total £1million is expected to be spent on the building with £250,000 being raised so far.
