Blood Red Shoes - 'It's Getting Boring By The Sea'

If ‘It's Getting Boring by the Sea’ was, indeed, a line in footwear, it’s a sparkling amalgamation of a cutesy round toes-Mary Jane t-bar heel, laced with the stomp and fearsome puncture of the sharpest, sexiest, S & M stiletto: at once alluring and innocent: interested and groaning with ennui. A razor sharp burst of bratty petulance and pouting, the tinny, rustic percussion and idle, thumb-twiddling guitar simplicity paints an ice-cool Brighton picture post-card. There’s a goose-pimpling eeriness to Blood Red shoes; aided somewhat by the sweet, butter-wouldn’t melt-exterior slapped up with a name that skirts over gruesome ensanguined stories. ‘Box of Secrets’ is the difficult sister of the A-side: where ‘its getting boring…’ paints on rosy-cheeks and sucks on a lollipop, all coyness and sweetness and sickly smiles for the camera; this is her Gothic sister, wryly making smoke clouds and drinking gin and idly thumbing through Plath poems. This is what the band seem to do so well: the doubleness of their songs mirrors perfectly their duo set up, a paradox of the sparse and the full on; the frightening and the comforting; the deranged spasms and demure, dress-up-box control. Blood Red Shoes: great pop songs, greatly feared by the Brighton tourist board.
