Hotly-tipped Reverend and The Makers have become a big deal in their hometown of Sheffield, with Jon McClure’s big mouth, big friends (he’s worked with the Arctic Monkeys, don’t you know) and admittedly big band all clamouring for promotion to the indie, er, big league. Which is all well and good, if it didn’t all sound so much like 90s Manchester. New Order synths, Mondays swagger and Ian Brown’s melodies all find their way onto the ballsy yet familiar ‘Heavyweight Champion of The World’ - and even Mancunian poet John Cooper Clarke lends his services on B-side ‘The Last Resort’. Reverend and The Makers could well be contenders, but they’ll have a few old champs to thank if they get there.
Released 28/05/07 on Wall of Sound
