Bono is being honoured Stateside for all of his humanitarian work in Africa.
The much-derided U2 frontman is receiving The Liberty Medal from the US National Constitution Centre for all his work fighting Aids and famine on the African continent.
The singer will receive the medal in September and will donate the $100,000 prize fund to the Debt Aids Trade Africa organisation set up by Bono five years ago.
Bono said of the award, that the African people are worthy of receiving it instead, saying: "I don't suppose there are enough Liberty Medals to go around, but in truth, those people should all be wearing one, too."
Six past winners of The Liberty Medal have gone on to scoop the Nobel Peace Prize down the years.
