Could there be anything more excruciating to listen to than the over dramatised banter between Noel Edmonds and apparent banker on Deal or No Deal? Apparently so if the latest single from das wanderlast falls into your lap. Released on the Cool For Cats label, growing sister label to Fierce Panda, ‘Sunday School’ is as comfortable to listen to as nails down a blackboard. The track spurts in to action with a some what animate, circus like mockery of crude instrumentation. Awkward drumming is pierced by a church like organ melody and immature vocals from Laura Simmons although quirky are hard to decipher amongst the instrumental cacophony. Due to das wanderlust’s reluctance to record in professional surroundings this problem will be far from being resolved in the near future.
It’s not all bad though, on the bright side das wanderlast are at least a highly experimental duo which is refreshing to hear and manage to fit individual life experiences comfortably into the lyrics of most of their songs. All said though, in light of recent events on the continent, perhaps a Eurovision entry would be more of a sound move in 2008.
